Cartoonist Watson Heston illustrated a number of large images for J.S. Coxey’s ‘Sound Money’ newspaper in 1895 and 1896. These plates were reproduced in various newspapers across the country. Finding the available images online rather poor, I sought out a few larger resolution versions.
Here are the results of that search.
His political cartoons predate ‘Sound Money’ by several years. In 1888 he prepared a series for The American Nonconformist of Winfield, KS.
Here is an early advertising poster for Coxsey’s newspaper.
…and here is a better scan of this graphic on another paper.
Many of Heston’s illustrations covered 3 to 5 columns with some taking up the entire breadth of a page. They often appeared on front pages, such as this one from the Helena (MT) News, April 15, 1896… ‘Crucified Between Two Thieves’ aka ‘History Repeats Itself.’ This cartoon inspired another controversial illustration which appeared in April of 1941, 45 years later. More on that in a future post.
The rest can speak for themselves. I have clipped these from various newspaper archives and attempted to find the best contrast and file sizes available. Enjoy!
