A Cartoon Conspiracy
^PM Daily article on Otto Brennemann and Dr. Donald J. McDaniel
We’ve been considering the seditious cartoons of Otto Brennemann in the last few articles. Actually, we’re just digesting “History Repeats” aka “The Crucifixion of Uncle Sam.” The PM article was certainly responsible for circulating the image to a wider sampling of citizens than perhaps all previous publications and distribution combined. But this was the summer of ‘43. The isolationist stance of April ‘41 was a lost cause.
In reading the PM article it becomes clear what was intended by the indictment of Brennemann and the emphasis on his cartoons. They were circulated by many of the publications named in the indictment and might have been used by the prosecution to suggest “conspiracy,” though I see no more conspiracy here than a news wire article or political cartoon being run in 50 syndicated newspapers.
Here are a couple of photos of Dr. McDaniel…
His crime, reportedly, was having been the mastermind behind the cartoons. He dreamed them up and hired Brennemann to draw them.
