Charged With Sedition:
Pelley, Serving 15 Years for Sedition, Faces New Trial On Charges He Conspired With 32 Others Against America (PM Daily, June 6, 1943, p. 18).
The goat bearded man above is William Dudley Pelley, now serving a 15-year term in a Federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind., for sedition. An Indiana jury found him guilty on evidence that included Pelley writings like those reproduced on this page. Similar evidence is to be introduced when Pelley goes on trial again; this time the charge is conspiracy--with 32 others--to "advise, counsel, urge and cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny" by the armed forces of this country.
Excerpts at right are from The Galilean, a Pelley publication. At various times he also published the Silvershirt Weekly, Pelley's Weekly, Liberation, and numbers of magazines and pamphlets. He ran the Silvershirt Legion of America, the Fellowship Press, Skyland Press, Pelley Publishers and the Christian Party. The financing was intricate; North Carolina still wants Pelley to serve time for violating blue sky laws.
Read into the record of his sedition trial last Summer were Pelley boasts in 1936, when he ran for President as leader of his Christian Party, that he 1) was close to Hitler and Japan and 2) would introduce Nazi methods if elected. He appears to have been the first of America's notorious anti-Semites to sing Hitler's praises, and he didn't stop, not even when the Japanese attacked at Pearl Harbor.
He sold literature to the Aryan Bookstore of Los Angeles, a Nazi set-up that specialized in anti-Semitic publications. The bookstore was operated by Hans Diebel, a Bundist, now interned. Diebel is named in the conspiracy indictment with Pelley. Some of those accused with Pelley may try to claim that they're anti-Semitic, but not anti-American. But Pelley's career makes plain that anti-Semitism exists in no ideological vacuum; it's a weapon of Fascism, an explosive force aimed at Democracy and the United Nations.
